Kristen Eck's 2019 30/30 Countdown: #23
Updated: Dec 11, 2019
Is it time for #23 in the 2019 30/30 Countdown? I think it is! Let’s talk about Minneapolis synth-pop band, Poliça. They got together back in 2011 and have released four studio albums. Life threw lead-singer, Channy Leaneagh a curveball last March as she was trying to clear ice-dams from her roof, fell-off, and broke her back.
She’s on the mend, though, and the band has already booked a world-tour with a sold-out show in Boston next March. Their 5th album, “When We Stay Alive” will be out on January 31st on the Memphis Industries label and I’m so excited, the first track from it made my 2019 Favorite-30! It’s called “Driving.”

Alt-rock pioneers, Joy Division were not around for very long before the tragic death of lead singer, Ian Curtis, but what they accomplished over two albums played a major role in the emerging genre of post-punk.

Recorded over telephone lines and in bathrooms at times, their debut “Unknown Pleasures” had a dark gloomy feel that still sounds relevant 40-years later. Let’s give “Shadowplay” a spin. It’s #23 on the Anniversary-30 Countdown. Check-out the
You-Tube version of the playlist for a re-imagined music-video for the song put together by the surviving members of the band for the album's 40th anniversary. Happy listening!
