Kristen Eck's 2019 30/30 Countdown: #21

Updated: Dec 14, 2019

Hi it’s Kristen back with #21 on the Favorite-30 Countdown. Cincinnati, Ohio band

The National released their 8th LP, “I Am Easy To Find” back in May. It features a multitude of orchestral-guests and vocalists, including Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. I saw them LIVE up in Maine last Summer. Wonderful show! Have a listen to the tune, “Light Years.”

I mentioned recently that I had some BIG jazz albums in the Anniversary-30 and we’ve reached the first of them from drummer/bandleader, Art Blakey.

Early-on in his career, he played drums in other people’s bands with some big names like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, and Charlie Parker. But it was when he formed his own group, The Jazz Messengers, that he made an enduring-impact, not only through his music, but also by the very long list of musicians he brought aboard and elevated to eventual stardom, including Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Chuck Mangione, and Wynton Marsalis.

The 1959 LP, “Moanin” is a signature-release from Blakey and his Messengers and is amoung an impressive list of Jazz records celebrating their 60th-anniversary. I’m going with the title-track written by Jazz Messengers pianist Bobby Timmons… It’s #21 on the Anniversary-30 Countdown. Happy listening! -Kristen
