Kristen Eck's 2019 30/30 Countdown: #18

Updated: Dec 18, 2019

Welcome back with the 2019 30/30 Music Countdown! London singer/songwriter,

Nilüfer Yanya checks-in at #18 on my Favorite-30. She started writing songs in her head head at age six and learned classical piano as her first instrument, but fell in love with guitar by the time she was 12.

She’s opened for The XX and Interpol… She stopped here in Boston last February touring with Sharon Van Etten. “Miss Universe” is the debut full-length album from Nilüfer Yanya released last March on ATO Records. Let’s give the track “Baby Blu” a spin.

Prince’s 1979 self-titled LP was the follow-up to his debut, “For You.” It peaked at #22 on the Billboard album chart and produced a #11 pop-single with “I Wanna Be Your Lover.”

Everything on the record is done by Prince: Writing, arranging, producing, playing… Everything...Except for a bit of backing-vocal on this song which also features something we would hear a lot more from him in the following years: A scorching guitar-solo. It’s the second single: “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad” and it’s #18 on the Anniversary-30 Countdown. Happy listening! -Kristen
