Hi there! Welcome back to the 2019 30/30 Countdown! Let’s chat about Los Angeles electronic duo, Smoke Season. Gabby Bianco and Jason Rosen have released three EP’s and a number of singles since they got together in 2013. I would be very excited at news of a full-length album or some LIVE shows here in the Boston area sometime next year. In the meantime, they call this 2019 single, a “love letter” to their East L.A. neighborhood of Echo Park… A cultural oasis of-sorts that has no time for rules about sexuality, gender identity, or fashion (sign-me-up!) The name of the tune is “Up On Me” and it’s #17 in my Favorite-30 Countdown!
Over on the Anniversary-30 countdown we find a very beautiful & underrated album from English singer/songwriter Nick Drake. Despite his considerable talent and penchant for trying innovative things in the studio, Drake fought an uphill battle with depression that he succumbed to in 1974 at the age of 26.
His 1969 debut LP, “Five Leaves Left” sold less than four-thousand records during his lifetime, but by the 1990’s it was discovered by a new audience and has since sold over
2-million copies. Let’s celebrate this gorgeous, yet melancholy album’s 50th anniversary with a tune that (much like every other track on the record) was recorded all-at-once in the studio with no overdubs. It’s called “Cello Song” and it’s #17 on the Anniversary-30 Countdown. Happy listening! -Kristen
