There is certainly something to be said for the beauty that can be found in simplicity and not overproducing a creation whether it's in music or art. However there also moments when the right collaboration of musicians can reimagine and interpret an artist's works in a breathtaking new way.
Today’s selection comes to us from Irish singer/songwriter Lisa Hannigan. She got her professional start in music, playing with Damien Rice before moving on to a solo career that has seen her release three albums of her own. Her 2016 record, “At Swim” was done in collaboration with guitarist & keyboardist, Aaron Dessner from The National.
Hannigan recently teamed-up with European orchestral collective s t a r g a z e to perform a series of concerts where they transformed the beautiful and sometimes sparse folk songs from her catalog into sparkling cinematic pieces. An entire album, capturing one of these performances in Dublin will be out on May 10th on the Play It Again Sam label.
From that record I’d like to share with you a song that Lisa Hannigan originally released last year. It found her working once again with Aaron Dessner and playwright Enda Walsh. The orchestral remake is stunning. It’s called “Swan” and it’s waiting for you now on the Knock Knock: New Music playlist. Happy listening! -Kristen
