Thank you to everyone who tuned-into the 4/9/2021 edition of BumbleBee Brunch on the website, Android app, and 90.7 FM WKKL. April 6th marked the one year anniversary of the very first broadcast on BumbleBee Radio. Originally conceived in February of 2020 as "BumbleBee Music," it was intended to be a weekly radio show that I was going to approach the radio station at Salem State University about carrying. Then the pandemic struck shutting everything down. Stuck without an outlet or station for my idea, I decided "Well I'm stuck at home with a whole bunch of time on my hands... Why not create my own radio station?" So I did and BumbleBee Radio was born.

It's been quite a year since that first broadcast. I think my favorite part of it thus far has been all the local artists from the Boston/New England area that I have discovered and added to the format on the station. I never liked the idea of coralling all the local music together and banishing it to a separate show at 10:00 PM on a Sunday night. In 2021 the quality of what's available for musicians and bands to record with (even in the DIY environment) is so much better than years gone by. Nobody's recording themselves on a four-track cassette deck in the tool shed anymore (although I know of a British band that spent several months in a tool shed making a great claymation music video.) There are also a large number of artists who deserve a contract with a record label, but don't have one because the music business has changed. I don't believe that's a good enough reason to keep an artist off the radio or to ship them off to the "local show" on Sunday night. If it's good enough to play on the radio then it's good enough to play side-by-side with everybody else. That's what I do here on BumbleBee Radio.

Much more work is ahead as I move forward into the second year on the station. More live-hosted shows is one of my big goals and there will be some adjustments to the format as well. Please feel free to reach out and share what you like or what you'd like see in the days to come on BumbleBee Radio. Email me at music@KristenEckRadio.com
