I'm running a bit behind on posting the playlist for the Friday 4/8 edition of BumbleBee Brunch as I was out late in Allston Friday night hosting what turned-out to be an amazing and fun night of electronic music at O'Brien's Pub with Violet Nox, Ex-Hyena, Andre Obin, Christina Shivers, and DJ JSanterelli. Once the music started it never stopped until closing-time! For those of us who remember happier days in music and late nights in Boston, we're painfully aware of how far fewer late-night spots are left to grab a bite at after a show (RIP Deli Haus, Buzzy's Roast Beef, Hi-Fi Pizza.) But I'm happy to report that Azama Grill (Egyptian street food) on Harvard Ave (right down the street from O'Brien's and Brighton Music Hall) is still there and open until 2:00 AM! I grabbed a falafel wrap after the show early Saturday morning (before walking back to my room at Hotel Boston off of Comm Ave) and it was fabulous! Long-live music and late night dining!
Friday's Brunch program featured a preview of the O'Brien's LIVE show with a fresh tune from Violet Nox and their NEW EP "Eris Wakes." We cued-up the track "Magnetar," featuring vocals from Noell Dorsey. We also went back to the first single from Ex-Hyena's forthcoming sophomore LP, "Moon Reflections" (due out in June) with the tune "Nightmare Pills." I am a long-time fan of electronic music, stretching-back to Brian Eno and David Bowie's Berlin years (LOVE "Subterraneans" off the 1977 "Low" LP!)
Our most distant song on the show came from Glasgow, Scotland's Petty Cassettes, but we also heard tunes from Edmonton, Canada's Tiffany Sparrow, Los Angeles band The Linda Lindas, North Carolina's The Blusterfields, and longtime Minneapolis indie presence POLIÇA. I first learned of Holly Brewer when I saw her Boston-based band Humanwine open for The Dresden Dolls at Avalon in Boston in 2004 (coming-off the Dolls' Rock & Roll Rumble victory in 2003.) I instantly became a fan and in March of 2010, as I was preparing to leave for a three-week trip to Seoul, South Korea to record sound for a documentary my lifelong friend Ray Bartlett wanted to film about tango-dancing in Seoul, I asked Holly if I could test-out my audio recording equipment on Humanwine's four March residency shows at Lizard Lounge in Cambridge. She said YES and oh my gosh what a wonderful four nights those were! I had the time of my life later in Seoul, but my favorite musical memories of 2010 were those four Humanwine shows!
Holly Brewer is now based out of Vermont and has been steadily working on and releasing music on her own terms over the past few years. Her new songs cover a lot of territory including social issues, nature, and just being alive. Visit Holly's Bandcamp page to listen to and purchase all of her heartfelt and inspiring music. We featured Holly's latest single, which I feel finds her stepping-it-up three or four notches with "Maxfield Parish Sky!"
Friday's program also featured music from Worcester, Massachusetts artist Michael Kane & The Morning Afters. Their debut LP, "Broke But Not Broken" was released on Friday 4/8 on Stateline Records and we played the track "Lost My Mind." Somerville band The Teezers checked-in with their new tune "Gaslighter." They're playing a SHOW Friday 4/22 at Jungle Community Music Club along with Linnea's Garden, Stormstress, and Key Of Caustic. I am your special guest-hostess for that evening! Portland, Maine's The Worst contributed "Couldn't Stay Away," and we heard from Boston's Matt York and Nantucket's Aldous Collins Band! Here is the FULL playlist for Friday's show...
