BumbleBee Brunch Playlist: 4/2/2021

Updated: Apr 4

Thank you to everyone who listened to the Friday 4/2/2021 edition of BumbleBee Brunch. We heard some great new music from Boston/New England area artists garageDogs, RoseR, Maria Lynne, The Chelsea Curve, Dinosaur Jr, dearbones, JATK, The Sparkle And Fade, Earthmark, and The Daylilies.

Lowell Hip Hop artist (and former WFNX on-air personality) D-Tension has turned his attention to another genre with his new album, "D-Tension's Secret Rock & Roll Project" and the first track is an instant Boston classic in my mind. There have been previous songs lamenting the loss of what Boston used to be before gentrification and overdevelopment wiped-away its character and creativity. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones sang about it in their 2002 track, "I Want My City Back" and last year Mister Vertigo bemoaned the loss of WFNX and WBCN in "Indie Nerd Strikes Again," but D-Tension tops the both of those tunes with "Kenmore Square." Filled with references to The Rat, Deli Haus, Planet Records, Bill's Bar, and more this punk-rock number reminds you of all the reasons why Kenmore Square used to be so cool and why it's now just some place you walk through on the way to Fenway Park (if you can afford to be found there anymore.)

"D-Tension's Secret Rock & Roll Project" has a number of guest collaborators... He is joined on "Kenmore Square" by Tanya Venom (guitar), Hannah Schzde (violin), and Monte Darbouze (bass.) The album is now available to listen to and purchase over on Bandcamp!

It's awesome to have some new music from Welsh trio The Joy Formidable. I've been a big fan of theirs since their 2011 debut album (was that REALLY 10-years ago?) "The Big Roar" and the epic song, "Whirring." "Into The Blue" is their latest single and the first music from them since 2018's "AAARTH" album. Guitarist and lead vocalist Ritzy Bryan says the new song is about “surrendering to love and magic” and “having the courage to enjoy a new journey and the mystery and excitement of something unexpected.”

No word on whether a new album is on the way from The Joy Formidable as of yet, but I'll enjoy the new song for now. Have a listen to "Into The Blue" over on their Bandcamp page!
