Thank you to everyone who tuned into the Friday edition of BumbleBee Brunch LIVE. This was our first-ever simulcast with Cape Cod Community College radio station 90.7 FM WKKL, the place where my radio career began way back in 1988! I served as the station's Program Director and morning show host (Monday thru Friday) until 1993, before leaving to focus on my duties at commercial Cape Cod stations WXTK and WCOD. After leaving for WBZ in Boston in 1997, I returned to WKKL on Friday mornings from 2007 to 2013 to host The Breakfast Show. It seems no matter where my journey in radio leads me, WKKL is always in my broadcasting DNA and I am now delighted to be able to share BumbleBee Brunch with Cape Cod's Classic Alternative!
WKKL ran into some hard times in 2020 and almost ceased to exist but thanks to a renewed commitment from Cape Cod Community College, the station's equipment was repaired and updated and more importantly a renewed push is now underway to introduce a new generation of students to the world of radio broadcasting. We had a fun Groundhog Day Reunion earlier in the week as former WKKL personalities RJ Jordan, Lisa Z, Dan Towers, Sarah Colvin, Rick Burgess, Don Gaston, and Clarence Barnes joined me and Cape Cod morning-radio legend Stephanie Viva (creator of Lemonadio) in a fun day of broadcasting. Thank you to RJ Jordan for putting the station's new Classic Alternative format together and thank you to Professor Lisa Z and 4C's for making all of this magic happen!
We had a ton of great new songs together with classic tracks on the Friday show. Boston electronic Indie-Pop duo This Bliss led-off the 11:00 hour with their new single, "Friend." they have an entire new album entitled, "Retroshade," on the way this March. Can't wait to hear it.
New Boston-based label Red On Red Records already has an impressive list of artists in-the-fold and many are finding their way onto BumbleBee Radio. On Friday morning we heard from Kid Gulliver with their infectious new single, "Beauty School Dropout," as well a great new single from the forthcoming EP by Linnea's Garden. "Nowhere Friday Nights" arrives on March 5th and we played "Non-Dramatic Breakup Song." You can catch both bands next Friday night (2/12/2021) from 8 to 9 PM in a Red on Red Records virtual music showcase. Looks like a great time! Click HERE for more info!
"Brittany had an undisclosed and mysterious near-death experience on her 15th Birthday. This dramatic event inspired her to learn how to play several instruments including drums, bass and guitar as well as write lyrics to her dreamy bedroom pop orchestrations."
You can catch Senseless Optimism along with BumbleBee Radio artist Idler Wheel in a virtual music event Saturday 2/6/2021 at 8:00 PM on ONCE Somerville's Virtual Venue. I have my ticket and am looking forward to that! Grab a copy of her latest single, "Half A Home" over on Bandcamp. Get tickets for the Saturday night show HERE.
