Thank you to everyone who tuned into BumbleBee Brunch Friday morning on the website, Android app, and 90.7 FM WKKL, Cape Cod's Classic Alternative. We had a lot of great Boston area music from Future Teens, DIGG Deep, Jaggery, Old Town Crier, and Jonathan Richman. Sasha And The Valentines (according to my friend Michael Marotta at Vanyaland.com,) actually got together at U-Mass Amherst before relocating to Austin, Texas. So technically we could call them a one-time Boston-area band... Works for me!
Friday's show featured the debut of a new track from The Shang Hi Los wonderful new EP, "Kick It Like A Wicked Bad Habit." The four-piece Boston band features two Lead Singer/Guitarists, Jen D'Angora (from Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents, The Dents, The Downbeat Five) and Dan Kopko (Watts,) in addition to Lee Harrington (From The Neighborhoods) on bass & vocals and Chuck Ferreira (Eddie Japan, Lonely Leesa & The Lost Cowboys) on drums. The first single off the EP, "Sway Little Player" made my Favorite-50 of 2020 show on New Year's Day after heavy airplay thru the Fall. That one was a duet. The second single, "Skippin' Records" has also been in Heavy Rotation in the first part of 2021. That tune featured Dan Kopko more out-front in the vocal mix. On Friday we debuted a third track, "Stay," featuring Jen D'Angora in the forefront vocally. Great song! Grab your copy of "Kick It Like A Wicked Bad Habit" out now on Rum Bar Records over on their Bandcamp page.
We also unveiled a another track from the forthcoming album from Boston electronic duo Ex-Hyena. "Artificial Pulse" is the debut LP from a quarantine-inspired collaboration between Bo Barringer and Reuben Bettsak. We've had three different singles from the LP in rotation on BumbleBee Radio and on Friday we played a fourth track, "Ultraviolet" for the very first time. "Artificial Pulse" drops on 2/19/2021. Thank you to Bo & Reuben for my advance-copy, which I'm listening to with my Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones as I'm writing this (sounds fantastic!) Watch their Bandcamp page for your copy next Friday!
Friday's show found us hopping into the Wayback-Machine for a visit with a group you may remember if you were part of the Wellfleet Beachcomber or Prodigal Son Coffeehouse scene on Cape Cod in the 1990's/Early 2000's. Lester was a Cape Cod supergroup, featuring the thunderous guitar and vocals of Steve Wood (The Greenheads,) Chandler Travis (Incredible Casuals and Chandler Travis Philharmonic) on guitar and vocals, Jay Cournoyer (The High Kings and The Elbows) on drums and vocals, and Cliff Letsche (The High Kings and The Greenheads) on bass. The band existed for a brief period of time from 1992 to 1993 but many of the songs they recorded would pop-up in LIVE shows by The Greenheads and Chandler's many other lineups. In 2000 an eponymous album of the songs Lester had created appeared on Chandler's Iddy Biddy label. You can listen to them and purchase a copy over on Bandcamp. I played a tune from the album that was a staple at some of the ear-shattering (yet delightful) Friday night and Sunday afternoon performances by The Greenheads at the Prodigal Son in Hyannis: "I Want It."
Programming Note: If you really love Boston area music and like finding out about new artists don't miss Boston Emissions with Anngelle Wood. Anngelle has been show host and organizer of Boston's Rock & Roll Rumble for over 12-years going back to its days on legendary Boston radio station WBCN. Today Boston Emissions lives on the web at BostonEmissions.com. BumbleBee Radio has been rebroadcasting all of her shows (which debut on her website on Fridays,) on Mondays since last Fall. I am very pleased to announce that we will be moving the rebroadcast from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM as well as adding a second rebroadcast on Wednesdays at 4:00 PM. I realize that while lots of folks are still working from home, many don't listen to music while they work (I can't work at all in silence... I go crazy if I don't have music on constantly, but that's just me... Yes, I'm weird,) so my hope is that even more folks will have an opportunity to hear Boston Emissions (and all of the wonderful Boston area music that Anngelle has for you to discover) as you wrap-up your work day (wherever that may be.)
