BumbleBee Brunch Playlist: 10/8/21

From a meteorological point of view October has a really concrete reason for being associated with scary spooky things and Halloween. Here in New England (and other areas equally distant from the equator) sunlight slips from the day in October faster than in any other month of the year. That's where BumbleBee Brunch steps-in, helping add some sunshine and smiles back into your Fridays!

To be fair, we had our fair share of Halloween Hauntings, because it IS the season and some James Bond related fun to celebrate the release of the latest film in the iconic spy-thriller series: No Time to Die. We went to an underappreciated Bond-theme song from Sheryl Crow and the 1997 film Tomorrow Never Dies. Perhaps the song is forgotten about because the premise of the movie seemed silly at the time. Media and internet mogul Elliot Carver (portrayed by Jonathan Pryce) threatens to use his influence to ignite a world war in the Taiwan Strait... Not so silly anymore in 2021. Or maybe it was because Jonathan Pryce had recently starred in a whole slew of television commercials for luxury car maker Infiniti. I remember thinking, "Oh, it's James Bond vs. the Lexus Guy." I didn't even remember the car maker correctly (advertising FAIL.) As always new indie music was the big star of the show Friday with excellent new tunes from Idler Wheel, Deap Vally, Robotic Hawks, and Cold Expectations. The Jacklights added some Halloween flavor with their new single "Monster Love," and our haunted musical train made stops in Los Angeles and Boise, Idaho for tunes from Beck Black and Bone Haus. We also debuted a new track off Brooklyn band Gustaf's frenetic & fun LP, "Audio Drag For Ego Slobs." Gustaf comes to House Of Blues in Boston on Tuesday 10/12/21 opening for Idles.

Speaking of shows, we've got a BIG one for you. Mark your calendars for Saturday 10/16/21. It's Smitt E. Smitty & The Feztones along with Gene Dante & The Future Starlets at Magic Room in Norwood! I am your special guest host for the evening, which is also the record release party for Gene Dante's NEW album "DL/UX" out everywhere on Friday 10/15! I have already heard the entire album and am happy to report it is fantastic. I can't wait to share some more songs from it with you! MORE info and tickets HERE!

The oldest song of the Friday show was also a Halloween Haunting with a cut from the Syd Barrett led Pink Floyd's 1967 debut album, "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn." Barrett has unquestionably been a huge influence on what would become alternative rock, despite the tragically short period of time he was lucid and creating music. The newest tracks on our Friday brunch came from Idler Wheel, Robotic Hawks, and an absolutely sparkling (and haunting) reawakening of Tears For Fears after 17-years of silence from the duo. Cover-song of the day: Boston band A Bunch Of Jerks went deep into the Blondie catalog with their rendition of ("I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear". They play Saturday 10/9 at The Square Root Coffeehouse in Roslindale along with The Peppermint Kicks and Little Billy Lost.

We closed out the show with a BIG Happy Birthday to Radiohead's Thom Yorke and the song they wrote for the 2015 James Bond film, SPECTRE. The film studio rejected Radiohead's creation as too dark, which mystifies me to this day. James Bond films ARE dark for crying out loud! In two of the films (1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service and the 2006 film Casino Royale) the love of Bond's life is dead at the end of the movie. Doesn't get much darker than that! Regardless, the film studio chose Sam Smith's "Writing's On The Wall" as the theme song, which is okay but nowhere near as good as Radiohead's submission. Have a listen to both songs and let me know what you think!
