Hello and welcome to 2019's first installment of Mixed-Up Memories! This is a playlist-driven retro-music feature that is available on both YouTube and Spotify. We begin the year with the Winter 2019 playlist. Most songs will have some sort of relevance to these Winter months, including but not limited to release dates of their albums. It could be a song with a Winter-theme or a song tied to an artist's birthday. My thought is to make some rules, bend them, and even throw them through a plate-glass window if the moment demands it.
It's getting a bit late here in January, so I'm going to kick-start this playlist by adding four songs! One of my favorite David Bowie albums, "Station to Station," was released on this day, 43-years ago in 1976. Let's open things with one of my favorite Bowie tunes: "TVC15."
This song was inspired by an evening when Bowie's friend Iggy Pop had over-indulged and started freaking-out, believing his girlfriend had been sucked-into the television-set.
It's hard to believe that MGMT's fabulous debut album, "Oracular Spectacular" turned 10-years-old last January, but it did. Let's celebrate 11-years with my favorite song off the record, "Electric Feel."
"Under the Pink," the second studio album from Tori Amos marks its 25th-anniversary at the end of this month. I've listened to this entire record start-to-finish more times than I could possibly count, but I'm going with the third-single from it, "Past the Mission." Listen closely and you will hear a very subdued version of Nine Inch Nails mastermind, Trent Reznor on backing-vocals!
We finish-off this opening-set with British electronic duo, The Chemical Brothers. Their ninth album, "No Geography" is due-out this Spring and I'll have more on that shortly, but I was reminded of how long it's been since I heard the tune "Galvanize" off their January 2005 record, "Push the Button." Let's do something about that! All four songs are waiting for you on the Mixed-Up Memories playlist. Happy listening! -Kristen
