Welcome back to Knock Knock: New Music! I hope your holidays were full of joy & laughter. Now we get-on with discovering the musical wonders that await us in 2019! Each month I will begin a new playlist here and will fill-it-up with new songs that I’ve found and loved and decided to share with you! Some of it will be indie rock, but don’t count-out electronica in its many forms (including trip-hop,) and look for some more jazz as the days unfold.
I could just post Led Zeppelin playlists and get a boatload of “likes” , but what’s the point? You know all of those songs already. A recent study concluded most of us stop listening to anything new by age-33. Would you like to prove them wrong? I know I do! As I grow older I have found tremendous joy in hearing songs I've never encountered before.
I’m leading-off 2019 with a song involving two favorite people of mine from the world of indie rock: Karen O, the lead singer of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and super-producer-artist Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse.) Danger Mouse is everywhere! He just produced Parquet Courts' “Wide Awake” album from last year and recently released a new Broken Bells single with James Mercer from The Shins.
I adore just everything Danger Mouse puts his hands on and this is no exception. In talking about their new collaborative album to be released later this year, Karen O said, “...the more I live the less is clear to me. When you create from a blurry place you can go places further than you’ve ever been. I think we were both excited to go far out.”
So this is very far-out… Cruising through three-movements, this epic nine-minute track arrives with sweeping-synthesizers, drops out of warp into a jazz & soul laced-number, and then leaves-orbit the same way it came in. It’s called “Lux Prima” and it’s my first song of the year on Knock Knock: New Music! Happy Listening! -Kristen
