We started the week off on Monday with a classic track from English punk rock pioneer, Buzzcocks on the Anniversary-30 playlist. Little did I know that when we finished the week, lead singer and guitarist Pete Shelley would be gone. He passed-away yesterday at the age of 63. While the Sex Pistols certainly made the most noise (in terms-of spectacle, as well as volume) and Ramones may have been better known to American audiences, Shelley's work with Buzzcocks had a profound impact on music. He was the master of the 3-minute pop-punk song and later in his solo-career he was an innovator in synth-pop and new wave.
Shelley was also a pioneer in the LGBTQ world, as someone who was not shy about being bisexual and referencing it in his songs in a time, when it was still incredibly difficult and dangerous to be out.
I'm going to bump the track that was slated to go into the Anniversary-30 playlist today for another Buzzcocks tune. I mentioned on Monday that both their debut and second albums are celebrating 40th-anniversaries this year. I added a track from the second LP, "Love Bites" on Monday, so let's go to the debut album, "Another Music in a Different Kitchen" for the song "What Do I Get?" I may be listening to Buzzcocks albums for a good portion of the weekend. Rest in peace, Pete Shelley!
Here is today's photo. This is a shot of the Back Bay in Boston in the late afternoon on Valentines Day of this year. I later went home and made myself a lobster roll and some Riesling. Who says I'm not good to myself?
But who is #24 on the Lights, Camera, 30 countdown of my Top-30 favorite new songs of 2018, you ask? That's an awesome question and I have the answer: It's Seattle singer/songwriter Damien Jurado! He released his first album back in 1997 on the Sub Pop label before eventually moving to the Secretly Canadian. His 17th-LP entitled "The Horizon Just Laughed" was released last May in a different order than many of today's artists. Those who wanted a physical copy on vinyl or CD received their copies in May. Those who wanted to listen to it on a streaming-service had to wait until July. I'm going with the tune, "Allocate." It's #24 on Lights, Camera, 30! Happy listening! -Kristen
