Hey now! Look what day it is... Happy Halloween! Hopefully you've been able to celebrate with a fun costume, a party, oran assortment of treats. While some may disapprove of the darker undertones of the holiday, I see it as a sort of an allegory for the changing of the seasons and more importantly, an opportunity to be creative and dare I say, different. Facing down your fear of being different is the first step toward finding your true-self!
Here is a photo of me from 1997 at the now defunct Vixen in Provincetown singing with one of my favorite bands at that time, Space Pussy. I was still very much in the closet at that point, but the true me was trying to claw her way out. Despite nine years of being on the radio at that point, I suffered from almost paralyzing stage-fright, when it came to appearing in-front of a live audience. So this moment on that night in 1997 was truly amazing in terms of how much fear I had to overcome just to get up there with a microphone. I wouldn't give the moment back ever! I haven't given the hat back either.
That brings me to the #1 song in the 31-Days of Halloween. I'm sure a few of you are wondering how "The Time Warp" isn't sitting here in this slot (it came-in at #2 yesterday.) Not only is this tune very appropriate for Halloween, it also resonates with my struggle to finally give-in and be myself.
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him."
Those are the lyrics of Ian McCulloch of Echo & The Bunnymen in what is one of my all-time favorite songs: "The Killing Moon." It's the #1 song on the 31-Days of Halloween playlist. Happy Halloween!! -Kristen
