Welcome to Monster Saturday! If you grew-up in the 1970's or 80's you may remember watching monster movies on TV on Saturday afternoons. Here in the Boston area the station to watch was WLVI TV-56 and their Saturday showcase: "Creature Double Feature."
It also aired for a three-year period on WKBS TV-48 in Philadelphia.
Very fittingly today is the anniversary of the very first Godzilla movie, which was first released in Japan 64-years ago. An edited & overdubbed English version with Raymond Burr inserted into the story was released in America in 1956. There have been a total of 32 Japanese Godzilla films and five American adaptions and original stories. A new Warner Brothers installment titled, "Godzilla: King of Monsters" will hit theaters on May 31st, 2019!
Creature Double Feature was packed with the 60's era Japanese Godzilla movies. Each Saturday we got to know Godzilla's arch-enemies Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidora, and Mecha-Godzilla (not to be confused with Mecha-Streisand.) The one opponent that absolutely had me mesmerized, though, was King Kong. The American king of monsters squared-off with Godzilla on the big screen for the first time in 1962.
The original King Kong movie with Fay Wray celebrated its 85th anniversary last March and wouldn't you know it, a brand new "Godzilla Vs. Kong" film is slated for 2020! Let's celebrate all of this with TWO songs (it's a double-feature, right?) We'll begin with the TV-open for "Creature Double Feature." For those of you following the YouTube playlist, you'll get to see and hear the original TV-56 open. On the Spotify playlist, you'll hear the original song that was used to create the open: "Toccata" by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer from their 1973, "Brain Salad Surgery" album.
Our second song comes to us from Blue Oyster Cult and their 1977 "Spectres" album. The tune is very appropriately titled, "Godzilla" and it's just been added to the 31-Days of Halloween playlist. Happy listening! -Kristen
