DAY-24: The 31-Days of Halloween

Kristen Eck in The 31-Days of Halloween: 10/24/2018

Can you feel it? We are one week away from Halloween and the excitement is almost tangible. Hopefully I can contain myself until then. Today's musical selection comes to us from London post-punk band Siouxsie and The Banshees. Formed in 1976 they would release a total of 11-albums that were played mostly on college radio here in the United States, but started to catch-on in popularity in the late 80's.

Siouxsie and the Banshees

In 1992 film director, Tim Burton asked the band to write a song for his latest project: "Batman Returns." This movie was truly a Burton extravaganza with tons of almost comic gloom and goth and a trio of dark villains played by Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito, and Christopher Walken. Siouxsie Sioux and company were a perfect fit for this film and they were joined in the process of writing their song by film-score composer, Danny Elfman.

Elfman's resume of film soundtracks is staggering. He's done 16-films for Tim Burton including "Beetlejuice", "Edward Scissorhands", "The Nightmare Before Christmas", and "Sleepy Hollow." You'll hear more about one of these movies very soon.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Face to Face Video

With an eerie string section and pieces of Elfman's score for "Batman Returns" woven into the music, the new Siouxsie and The Banshees tune was ethereal and mesmerizing. A sinister cat-purr/growl from Siouxsie Sioux was a fitting exclamation point on this track. It's called "Face To Face" and it's waiting for you on the 31-Days of Halloween playlist. Happy listening! -Kristen
