Shop smart... Shop S-Mart! If you already know this piece of sage shopping advice then you're probably familiar with the classic cult-movie franchise that began on this day in 1981: "Evil Dead!"
Written and directed by Sam Raimi, this low-budget supernatural horror flick launched the career of Bruce Campbell, as the chainsaw-armed hero, Ash Williams. Combining horror, humor, and quite a bit of blood & gore, the film only grossed $2.4-million here in the United States but would clear over $27-million internationally and would be followed by two sequels: 1987's "Evil Dead 2" and "Army of Darkness" (one of my favorites) in 1992. A reboot of the original film was released in 2013.
In 2015, Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi teamed-up again to create the "Ash Vs. Evil Dead" television series on Starz. They produced 30-episodes over three seasons before the show was cancelled last year. Filled with laughs and enough gore to fill-up a football stadium, the show introduced some fun new characters to the franchise including the bad-ass Kelly Maxwell (played by Dana DeLorenzo) and Pablo Simon Bolivar (played by Ray Santiago.) Sci-Fi/Fantasy hero, Lucy Lawless ("Xena: Warrior Princess," "Spartacus," and 2013's "Battlestar Galactica" reboot) joined the cast as the demon-mother/hunter, Ruby and there are even a couple of hilarious guest appearances by Lee Majors ("The Six Million Dollar Man") as Ash's dad. If you're an "Evil Dead" fan and have some binge-watching time as we had toward Winter, this series is well worth your time if you haven't seen it yet!
So how 'bout a little background music for our heroic crew of demon hunters? Let's go to Metallica's 1984 "Ride the Lightning" album and the tune, "For Whom the Bell Tolls."
It's waiting for you on the 31-Days of Halloween playlist. Sound groovy? Happy listening! -Kristen
