Hello and welcome to another edition of Knock Knock: New Music! I'm your host Kristen Eck. Following a cold windy day of swirling snow here in the Boston area on Friday, Mother Nature finally relented a bit on Saturday. It was still chilly, but the wind had calmed to a breeze, the sun was out, and then I found this outside near my car...
Nothing makes me quite as happy after a long Winter than the sight of the first Crocus, followed soon after by the Daffodils. Seeing life spring-up from the brown lifelessness of the previous year is simply amazing. I have a host of different seedlings growing in peat-pots in the South-facing windows of my home in Beverly, just waiting for that magical day in May, when they go outdoors for good.
The themes of Spring: birth, renewal, and youth all tie-in to my love of new music. Many people my age are content with the past. For some of them music ended in 1990. I don't get that. Call me weird. Call me a rebel, but I'm an old-maid that loves to be surprised by something I've never heard before.
This past weekend saw me listening to Jack White's "Boarding House Reach," Goat Girl's newly released eponymous debut-album, as well as the new Cosmo Sheldrake record, AND... an album which has been in the early-running for my favorite of 2018.
I'm talking about the album, "I'm Dreaming" by Alice Ivy. She's a 25-year-old electronic-soul musician/producer out of Melbourne, Australia. She first tried playing the clarinet, but that didn't work-out so well. Eventually she found her comfort-zone in electronics and sampling.
She cites fellow Australian act & sampling masters, The Avalanches as one of her biggest influences. I adore The Avalanches, so it wasn't a big leap for me to fall-in-love with this record as well.
"I'm Dreaming" was released on digital-formats on February 8th. It will be released on vinyl on May 11th. I have my pre-order in for the vinyl-record after listening to it multiple times on Spotify. I have anxiously been waiting for a video of this next song to appear so I could share-it with you. That video has finally appeared! Have a look and a listen to a beautiful tune called "Chasing Stars" performed LIVE at Melbourne Town Hall for Triple-J Radio. The track features a guest appearance from Sydney singer/songwriter, Bertie Blackman.
My second artist this week on Knock Knock: New Music is the The Vaccines. They're a
five-piece indie-rock band out of London. They got together back in 2010 and released their debut album the following year. They've been on a three-year break following their "English Graffiti" LP of 2015, but they're back with a new record and a tour. The tour is currently unfolding in Europe, but they'll make stops in Brooklyn and Los Angeles next month and then Philadelphia & Washington D.C. in July. Nothing here in the Boston area as of yet, but I'll let you know if that changes.
"Combat Sports" is the fourth full-length album from The Vaccines. It is available on limited-edition orange vinyl at the band's website at TheVaccines.com. Check out the official music video for the song, "Nightclub."
That's this week's edition of Knock Knock: New Music! If you have any comments or questions, I'd love to hear them. Drop me a line at my new email address: Kristen@KristenEckRadio.com.
